Radio Shack started out decades ago as a chain of largely surplus and small
parts oriented stores. They evolved into a division of Tandy, a company
known as a leather crafts vendor, with branches in strip or indoor malls in
nearly every city. They presently stock less of what management calls "wall
parts", basic electronic parts stuck in the back of the store in most present
layouts, and push higher ticket items like TVs, computers, and stereos. Some
of what they sell is decent quality, while some is substandard relative to
price or advertised description. A few items are custom products made
possible by being a very large chain. The trick is to sort out the
difference, or find items on sale that are overpriced otherwise.
Rat Shack has become a 'least common denominator' of sorts, where it's
expected you can refer a non-electronics person who doesn't know how to
contact the 6 nearest OEM/service oriented wholesalers.
