Or they feel guilty about not giving the child quality time and are
trying to make up for it by giving in.  Or, caught up in a world of
divorce, thousand mile separations from extended families, and fractured
friendships, they simply want the child to like them, and fail to
deal with the fact that the child is simply too young and too
inexperienced to unconditionally accept his or her parents.
And, in some cases, they honestly feel they cannot control their kids,
and giving in seems easier than fighting all the time.
My son knows someone who, at fourteen, told her mother, "I am going to
turn tricks in this house, in my bed, to get money.  And if you try to
stop me, I will run away, and you will never see me again."  The mother,
in terror of her daughter living on the streets, and being murdered,
allows her to "conduct her business" at home.  He looked at the table a
moment after he told me, and then said, "I know what you would say if I
told you something like that.  You'd say, well, I guess you'll have to
run away then, won't you.  Because you are never going to be a
prostitute in my house."
