subject: maggot therapy

Saw something on TV today about a dr. in Irvine using maggot therapy on
people with gangenous wounds. It seems that maggots eat the rotten flesh
while leaving the good..also they destroy bacteria inside their bodies and
may exude some kind of antibacterial action on tissue itself. It showed a
man who had diabetic wounds. One leg was ready to be amputated and the
maggot therapy was tried. In three weeks the wound had closed over and was
on it's way to healing. Today it's just a scar. The maggots cleaned out the
old infected flesh allowing new healthy tissue to form. He had another
episode with the other leg and did NOT have the maggot therapy. Every
attempt to save the leg medically failed and the leg had to be amputated. It
seems that this therapy is being tested pretty extensively in England with
good results.
