In the interests of full disclosure, let me clarify this... I *own* the
SNIPPETS server - the hardware, the domain names resident on it, the whole
ball of wax. I can offer almost anything I feel comfortable with because
my sole point of contact with anyone else is buying the bandwidth from the
ISP where I have the server co-located. I have "access to" it in the same
sense as I have access to my home or car.
The server is self-supporting. I have one sponsor for the DIYspeakers.net
and LDSG sites who's only interested in selling drive units to do-it-
yourself (DIY) speaker builders (IOW, he couldn't care less about C
programming). Even he has little say since my sponsorship model follows
public broadcasting model rather than the commercial broadcasting model.
He pays less than typical commercial rates for only a couple of prominent
plain graphics ads on 2 of the some 50 pages that comprise the site. Since
those sites receive between 10-20k hits/ month, and he sees lots of
positive feedback from customers, and his sponsorship fees totally
subsidize my co-location and bandwidth fees, it's a win-win situation.
In addition to my own sites, I currently provide free space to three other
folks who provide information, tutorials, and services to the DIYspeakers
community. I'll probably take on a few more free tenants in the future.
Although the server is fully subsidized, I may accept one or two sponsors
at some time in the future for the programming side of things. Funds from
them, plus the occasional contribution I receive will pay for the
inevitable upgrades in the future. On the SNIPPETS pages, I currently
feature ads for Digital Mars and Burton Systems Software. These are
currently free ads I put up for old friends Walter Bright and Dave Burton.
At some point in the future, if I get a programming site sponsor or two,
the free ads will go away.
I realize this will make you even more resistant to any proposed
collaboration, but I don't want you coming back later saying I'd hidden
any crucial facts. You may now give free rein to your paranoia to rework
these into any sort of nefarious hidden agenda you may wish to attribute
to me.
