Whales.
That 'diagram' is the problem. You've seen them all your life, and they're
pure bullshit.
There's no 'backing up, because there's no 'advancing'. The fact that we
evolved from apes does not make us better than apes _unless you can define
what
'better' is_.
Now, I know that sounds like pure PC bullshit - of _course_ we're better
than apes. OK, put my not-so-hairy ass naked down in the veldt of Africa
and let's see who's better. The ape is stronger, faster, a better climber,
and protected from the sun - I don't stand a chance.
Dogs are descended from wolves. Are dogs 'better'? Are wolves 'backwards'?
You evolve to fill a niche. It doesn't make you better or worse, just different.
Take whales. They descended from something that came from the sea. They
evolved legs. They went back to the sea, and lost the legs. Backwards,
right?
Blind fish at the bottom of the ocean. They evolved eyes, now they don't
have them any more. Backwards?
Nope. Forwards; ever forwards.
