Again - define 'higher'.  Better looking?  Faster? Stronger?  Smarter? 
Bigger? Smaller?

The whale descended from an ancestor that could run much, much faster than
it could.  Is that 'higher'?  We descended from a critter that was much
stronger than we are.  A cat is descended from something much larger.

You're getting caught up in those stupid taxonomic diagrams, and equating
'farther up in this pretty picture' as 'not as good'.  It's not..
