About Glitter and Civil Disobedience
Posted on June 19, 2011 by mmunson

There is a new form of civil disobedience going on this year for next
year's presidential election, the glitter bomb. LGBT and progressive
campaigners have glitter bombed Newt Gingrich, former governor Tim
Pawlenty and Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann for their hostile attitudes
towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people in our nation.

Although it may seem to be a cute new way of protest and was amusing for
the first time, it will get these individuals in deeper trouble than the
equality campaigners who chained themselves to the White House fence last
year. Yes, we may remember the activists who threw pies at Anita Bryant in
the 1970s for her opposition to LGBT people, but we need to change our
strategies in how to fight for equality the right way.

Throwing stuff at people is assault, if you can not do it to President
Obama do not do it at all. If Michelle Bachmann became the Republican
nominee, the Secret Service is not going to take these cute antics kindly.

As what I said on the GetEqual Facebook wall, we need to change strategies
and do viral videos where we can share the message on sites such as
Youtube and Vimeo. We can have political action committees even use these
videos that inform voters about the regressive ideas that future
Republican Party presidential nominees may have, such as the majority of
Republican Party presidential candidates want to undo DADT repeal even
though troops elsewhere are still effective with LGBT people in their
armed services.

If we get independents and young people to avoid choosing these non
inclusive candidates then we can make a difference. Maybe homophobia will
be pass in the 2016 elections.
