This is an interesting line of thought. In looking around at Trek sites
I've often wondered why someone chose the ship's name they did.

It might be interesting to hear from people what made them chose the name
they did for their ships.

In my case I chose the name U.S.S. Chamberlain after the American Civil War
hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain who received the Congressional Medal of
Honor for holding the hill Little Round Top during the Battle of
Gettysburg. After the war he was elected four times Governor of the State
of Maine and he was also President of Bowdoin University.

He was a university Professor before the war and the combination of
intelligence, fighting ability, and his understanding of the implications
and meaning of the Union victory was what attracted me to the person of
Joshua Chamberlain. He was someone that did not lust for war or battle, but
he understood that the Civil War was one that had to be fought and won by
those who stood against the concept of slavery and stood for a society in
which all were free. That was why I chose his name for the Starship in my
fiction.
