That is so non-standard...

That program also relies *excessively* on those function keys.  It wouldn't
bother me so much if I could find a later-type keyboard that would put them
on the side like they used to.

I rather like this idea better.  WordStar back in the CP/M days got it
right with their use of ctrl-whatever keys,  a touch typist doesn't have to
take their hands off the home rows to do stuff.  I'm thinking of maybe
making changes like that in mc.  :-)
