subject: Freeware BASIC?

FA> FA>> Is there a freeware BASIC compiler/interpreter for DOS
FA> I run DR-OpenDOS v7.02. No BASIC included.
A 6+meg download and NO BASIC??? Shame!
FA> GE> Firstbasic - Shareware, smaller version of Powerbasic.
FA> GE> ASIC - Shareware.
FA>Where can I get these via FREQ or FTP (no Web)?
FirstBasic & ASIC are in many BBS's "programming" file areas.
Firstbasic & Powerbasic:
PowerBasic, Inc., 316 Mid Valley Center, Carmel, Calif.
  93923, phone 408-659-8000, email info@powerbasic.com
FA>What are the latest versions?
I have FirstBasic v1.00 08-01-96 / *had* ASIC400.
FA>Are they any good?
Yes / can't remember.
FA>Can they compile?
Yes / can't remember.
FA>Can GW-BASIC programmes be ported to another basic to be compiled?
FirstBasic doesn't always use *exactly* the same commands as Qbasic or
GWbasic, and the syntax is sometimes different when it does, but I've
managed to convert most of my programs so far, and they all compiled.
For more info on Firstbasic, see if the POWER_BAS echo is available
through your BBS. I'm sure they've got a lot more info on converting and
compiling, and it will keep us out of trouble here (darn echo rules!).
