Actually, I played a modified reissue Bassman that my amptech friend had
installed a master into.  It was very nice.  He internally jumped the
channels, and the two volume knobs controlled the preamp gain.  Then
he added the master output volume pot in one of the inputs.
It sounded quite good and if I had a Bassman reissue, I'd consider
having him add it to mine.
BTW, I just picked up yet another 4x12 Marshall cabinet.  This one is an
early 70's that was cosmetically *very* thrashed, but it has the
original greenbacks and sounds really nice.
I just field stripped it, and I'm going to have it recovered it white
tolex with basketweave grill.  I'm doing one of my JTM45 reissue heads
to match.  I oughta look like the cover of The History of Marshall when
it's done :))   So much for any spare room in here :))
