Although I'm sure it will give Charles more fodder for his chauvinistic
bombast, I'm proud to say that that particular rule, in somewhat different
wording, dates back to my terms as moderator. It was a real pain during
the 1st Gulf War. We lost a couple of good people who simply couldn't
restrain their jingoism. OTOH, we managed to keep on topic and I got a lot
more positive feedback about the rule than negative.

The most notable loss was Roy Browning, a fellow Houstonian who worked for
me at the time. A gung-ho ex-Marine, Roy wouldn't tolerate not being able
to sign all his messages with slogans almost guaranteed to alienate the
C_Echo membership that lived outside the US, or who were otherwise opposed
to the war. I established the rule that the echo is an international
community and therefore neutral territory.
