The Spirit IIs had an extremely nasty bug insofar as when saving any
settings to NVRAM, you must only ever use &W. Unfortunately, many
comms apps rather rudely write to profile n with &Wn, which immediately
turns a V.32bis Spirit 2 into a V.32 Digicom Scout. The bottom line is
that you must NEVER use &Wn on your Spirit (although I understand that
some later ROM revisions were OK).

I understand that Trev Roydhouse has had partial success at restoring these
modems to their former state, but the vast majority of them will need to be
returned to the distributor (Mike Bourne Electronics) for repair.
