not under win2k sp2 using activestate's perl v5.8.0
mine gives me: ! 27 Feb 15:40:08 -- this is a test
using %X gives me: ! 03:39:36 PM -- this is a test
which is not a max style log...might be different under linux, which
probably has a standard posix header. i'm assuming it's the windows one
that deviates from the standard...
