Peter, at 15:30 on Jun 15 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley... PM> From Here to my local exchange is about 200 metres, and TML at PM> Wollstoncraft is probably less than 2kms away and this is what I got. Why not a 33k6 connect, I wonder? Those stats are very conservative, given your proximity to the exchange. PM> Speed 31200/31200 PM> Symbol Rate 3429/3429 PM> Carrier Frequency 1959/1959 PM> Trellis Code 64S-4D/16S-4D PM> Rx Lev/TX Lev/SNR 26.9/14.0/37.0 Wonder if the 16-State trellis code has something to do with that? PM> Considering from home to the my bbs is about 20 kms and the other PM> side of Sydney Harbor, with USR's at both ends I get solid 33k6 PM> connects, and much better signal levels, I'd be wondering what PM> is wrong at Pauls end. I've never been completely happy with my connects to Paul's board, and I'm not talking about the actual link rates, which can be anything from 21600 to 28800 (I've still not had better than a 28k8 connect with his modem yet), but rather, the peculiar, occasional multiple attempts at negotiation which I hear. PM> Is it bad lines, too low tx level on the Netcomm (although my tx speed to PM> him was 31200 too), More NetComm incompatibilities, v34b vs v34+ PM> incompatibilities?????, I wonder... Dunno, but he lives in a reasonably large block of units, and the telephone wiring in these can often leave a fair bit to be desired. My own lines aren't perfect either, but I still manage to connect at 28k8 or better with every other modem I call, apart from his. Needless to say though, my best connects were seen when he had the Courier on line, whilst the Viper was also quite acceptable. No so the bloody M34F though...
