It served a good and useful purpose. With thousands of members either
participating or lurking in each echo. it only took a handful of agents
provocateurs to make things unpleasant for everyone. Usually, a simple
private message to stop the offensive behavior was all that was required.
In the case of persistent misbehavior, excommunication was an effective
solution.
Your recent behavior would have easily warranted action in the past.
Obviously, things have changed. You have your free speech rights and
everyone else has to pay for it. With the contraction of FidoNet, perhaps
the feeling is that even obnoxious members are better than no members.
