I have never been a fighter or a serious football player, but I understand
that a fundamental principle is to avoid having the other party think that
you are mortal. They might not try stuff if they think it would just get
them hurt, and wouldn't have much affect anyway. But if they see your
weakness, they will find enormous inner strength and resolve, and will try
anything to cut you down.
