The US is more vulnerable than we thought (any country can suffer a disaster; the surprise is that three days later many people had nothing to drink or eat, yet TV crews could get in and film). 2. Amazing how 99% of the stranded were black. I'm not attempting to find blame in these observations. I'm just telling anyone interested that these two points are a real surprise. On the second point, I guess the issue is that there is something in the US culture that has an unfortunate side effect of leaving large numbers of people in a pretty weak position in society. Now might be an appropriate time to admit that in Australia we have enormous issues with the tiny proportion of our population that are Aboriginal. Many outback communities have been ruined by a craze for petrol sniffing since young people can't see any brighter future.
