Hi, Dave.
DJ> I recall an interveiw on the tube with the director of the
DJ> rocketeer film, who bragged that he disregarded every order that
DJ> disney made for the film, & vowed after , to never again work on a
DJ> disney film. From what I've heard, it bombed BIG time at the box
DJ> office!!
I thought the film was true to the look and feel of the Rocketeer
comic book. Heck, the guy who played Cliff looked EXACTLY like the
comic character (it was almost a scary-resemblance). A couple of
changes here and there... most notably the name of Cliff's Bettie
Page-girlfriend (I think her name was Penny in the film, wasn't
it?)... but otherwise, I thought the movie was a nice little adventure
movie. Unlike so many other comic-to-movie adaptations, the Rocketeer
looked like he was lifted straight off the pages of the comics...
which is something Batman can't even claim (although it's true that
the bat-books have been somewhat influenced by the films). It's too
bad "the Rocketeer" didn't do better in theatres. I would've loved to
see another one. Even more of a shame though was Dave Stevens'
inability to capitalize on the film to sell a few more comics (no new
comics were published anywhere near when the film was in theatres). I
remember... a friend of mine and I went on opening night... and a
local comic store was giving away little Rocketeer PVC's with suction
cups stuck to them away (it's still stuck to my parent's
refrigerator...).
DJ> I still think that if Stevens would get off his ass to do a 75
DJ> page graphic album adventure set in WW2 for the character, it
DJ> would be a good return. The character would work well in team up
DJ> tales with other heroes in that era, but it looks
DJ> doubtfull.obviously, Stevens suffers from whatever also ails
DJ> Steranko.
How did the 3rd issue of "the Rocketeer Adventure Magazine" sell?
I'm asking 'cuz maybe it didn't sell all that well... and that's why
we haven't seen anything new. It doesn't really surprise me... if
truth be known. I just don't know whether there's much of an audience
for a book like that anymore.
As for team-ups with other characters from that era... didn't
they already do that? Didn't "Cliff's New York Adventure" sorta
feature Lamont Cranston... the Shadow? If he wasn't... he sure looked
like the Shadow.
Talk to you later.
David
