Is John's acceptance of S rational based on the reasons he gave? > I think this is a matter for psychology: the problem is obviously how much belief we have in the magician's claim, and how much in what we know/believe from contemporary science. Clearly there is a large body of knowledge and opinion that says that such a claim is impossible, and as scientists, we would hope that this would be generally accepted. I think a strong counter-argument is to ask if John would believe a politician. Some philosophers of science have advocated using ideas from Bayesian probability to analyse the development of science (e.g. Howson & Urbach's Scientific Reasoning: the Bayesian Approach). Whilst I'm not convinced by this, I think they can be useful in framing a discussion on belief and evidence. > > 2. It could be made more scientific by being repeated, and examined carefully, and finally by theories being put forward (and tested) to explain the observation. > > 3.
