Kuwaiti radical Islam is partly the government's doing

Extremism in Kuwait is partly the government's own making. In establishing
radical religious movements to counter liberals demanding democracy, the
government gave teeth to Islamists. When Parliament was dissolved in 1976,
many liberal societies, such as the Istiqlal Club and the Cultural and
Social Society, were closed. Instead the authorities depended on radical
movements, with extremists appointed to top-level positions in government.
In the 1980s and 1990s, many radical youths, who were government employees,
were assigned to work in unlicensed societies. For example, the Social
Reform Society had 74 unlicensed branches and the Islamic Heritage Revival
Society had 54 such branches. The school curriculum was the first tool used
by them to spread their agenda.
Today, the Islamists want to make the state "100 percent
Islamic." They have forced the government to ban pop concerts, an
issue that led to the resignation of Information Minister Mohammed Abu
al-Hassan late last year, and are even demanding implementation of Islamic
law as the "only" source of legislation by amending the
Constitution.
