I agree with you that Scalia is the one who deserves it.   However, to
elevate Scalia and fill two vacancies would require 3 trips through the
Senate.  Given the gang of 7 to 10 weak kneed republicans and the democraps
united hatred of anyone to the right of Ginsburg, its probably the
expedient thing to do.  Probably not a lot more expedient, but some.

It will take the democraps about 1/2 day before the talking points are
"This makes the replacement for O'Connor even more important to be
neutral (i.e., not a conservative but a liberal) because we let Roberts
through."

Now they will go through the motions on Roberts but he will sale through
since he's replacing Rehnquist, and they will try to claim that proves how
reasonable they are when they try to torch whoever gets put up next.
Whomever the next nominee is, they are going to go through the ringer of
lies and then some unless Bush goes nuts and appoints Ginsburg's clone.
