SD>What I'm wondering is would XP be safe enough to run it as a ham shack machi

I would think so. While I have a laptop with Vista on it (that I
bought at the Monroe, Louisiana hamfest awhile back for $100 (the guy
wanted $150, but when I told him I only had $100, he sold it to me!),
that is used for demos at "Hamming In The Park" events, and at hamfests,
for showing off D-Star, D-Rats, Echolink, and Packet via Telnet. I hope
to soon add a small packet station in the shack, for use with a VHF
Packet Door, done by the late Dave Perry, W4KGU, SK...and licensed hams
will be able to access the Arkansas Packet Network, courtesy of my TNC,
through the BBS...which I'm still running under XP.
