One theory is that dreams - in part - represent play-acting
rehearsals for real-life situations - and that that explains
much of their sometimes-stressful content.

Reacting well in stressful situations is a useful skill.

It can't easily be built in - since the stressors involved
are too subject to environmental fluctuations.

Consequently it needs to be rehearsed for in advance - since learning via 
a trial-and-error process involving messing up such situations in the 
real world can be a prohibitively expensive process.
