You need to be careful to read past the headlines in the articles.
Money magazine has reported serious consequences for companies that
downsize, and the practice is dwindling rapidly. Many of the larger
corporations which downsized in the past several years, after a brief
rise in stock prices, suffered severe financial repercussions - loss of
profits and a drop in stock values. Many found themselves unable to
operate at the lower level of productivity and had to replace the cut
positions. AT&T, for example, filled 15,000 jobs in the 12 months
following their announced layoff of 40,000, and replacement continues.
Employment in the U.S. is nearly at an all-time high, and many of the
new positions, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor, are
professional and skilled positions.
