We don't really know why we sleep at all, but most mammals do so. A few,
like dolphins, sleep with one hemisphere at a time.
We've also no idea why we have nightmares. It is know that some drugs, like
chlorpromazine, will induce nightmares, but the mechanism is not understood.

The best current theory is that sleep allows the brian to edit memories, and
discard those that are not useful to it. However why this would require
taking the whole brain out of commission is unclear. It is also unclear why
this would be associated with the subjective impression of dreaming. It is
known that sleep deprivation rapidly reduces functioning, and eventually
proves fatal.

Considering we spend about a third of our time asleep, the whole field is
grossly under-researched. If you want to make your name as a scientist, this
would be a very good subject to investigate.
