Oh geez, now I'm being graded!
>> 1. command the ship
>That a really vague statement, what does it mean exactly?
Well, Garry said to be concise. "Command the ship" means knowing
who is gi= ving the
orders, who is the one that has be to be listened to, and knowing that he,
= the captain,
is ultimately responsible for what happens on the ship and with the ship.
= It means that
the person who is the captain knows all of this and understands all of this= .
>I would tend to say that this is more the responsibility of the XO and
Chief of Operations. Their job is to present the captain with a ship in
good order ready to carry out his directives.
Perhaps in the day-to-day operations of the ship, but in most of the ships
= whose stories
I write, the captain generally does not come onto a ship with the crew
alre= ady established
and ready to serve under the preparation of the XO. The captain, the first=
officer and
the crew might be all new to each other and the ship, in which case it
beco= mes the job
of the captain to do this. The XO or first officer would certainly play a
= role, but the ship
ultimately would be a reflection of the captain, especially if he is a good=
and capable
captain.
>I would say, less than being to do repair work, he must understand the
capabilities and limitations of his ship equipment and crew intimately.=20
The mission can not fail because the Captain forgets that his ship can go
faster than warp five or has, like, shields. Or that Ensign Nggrllchuk=20
is an amphibian and has a very limited duration on the dert world.
That too, along with my original comment. It would not do the captain very=
good to listen
to something from one of his officers about the ship, crew or mission, and=
then say, "You know
what, I really don't know what you're talking about." The captain won't be=
an expert on all
the systems, but he has to know enough to understand what the other
officer= s are talking
about.
Otherwise, it looks like the other comments made the grade.
>> How I am doing now? Four questions answered.
>I am having fun.
I'll tackle another question when I find a little time.
