Well, I tend to pick "classical" names. The names for the ships
in the earl= iest stories
were simply pulled out of the Franz Joseph's "Technical Manual,"
but the fi= rst extended
set of stories centered around the starship Alexandria. I took the name
fr= om the Egyptian
city which was at one time the location of a great library. Because the
Al= exandria was
meant to be a ship of exploration and science, I thought it was an
appropri= ate name.
When it came to naming the ship in the Next-Gen era stories, I stayed with
= the letter
A and picked another classical name, Athena, after the Greek goddess. When=
picking
names, I try to avoid names that might have appeared before, either in
cano= n or in the
fan fiction sites I was aware of. After I started, another fan fiction
wri= ter came up with
the Athena as a ship name. I haven't encountered an Alexandria, though.
