The variations in the fast food prices are also, more so, location related.
If you have a fast food restaurant on a heavily traveled road near a bunch
of office buildings, your Whopper may be $3.29; but if you're in less
popular area you're going to have to be at $2.79. Around here, the most
densely populated state in the nation, they're all in good locations so
they're all about the same (though I'm sure off in the hinterlands and pine
forests they're lower, but I don't go out there into the wilds personally),

I no longer remember the numbers, but there used to be a McDonalds right on
the beach here, it was open year round, but from Memorial Day to Labor Day
the prices were probably 50% higher -- higher demand, captive consumers (no
one would give up their parking spot to drive a mile inland to the other
McDonalds to save a buck) so they got away with it. LOL, I recall walking
over to a new pizzeria across the street from the beach and ordering 3
slices, he threw them in the oven and asked for almost $9 (compared to the
$4.50 or so a mile inland) I reduced the order to 2 slices -- I had to, I
didn't have $9 on me at the moment 

You're right though, there is no competition for gas prices at the retail
level, no matter where you live you need the gas, so no incentive for them
to be lower than the next station.
