I should add that one package has gotten considerably dumber. At its peak,
DIRPORT.H/C supported DOS, Win16, Win32, OS/2, and various flavors of *nix
(Linux wasn't yet a major player) and a multitude of compilers from MS,
Borland, Watcom, IBM, Symantec/Zortech, and Mix, in addition to various
ports of gcc.
As the market evolved, it became apparent that on PC platforms, MS's
compiler was the lingua franca. Watcom and Symantec dropped their
compilers and even Borland was configured to digest MSC code. The Symantec
compiler lives on as the free Digital Mars compiler, but it was always
98+% compatible with MSC.
As a result, I eliminated a lot of the bewildering complexity of the
original DIRPORT.H/C. I still have the originals saved away if anyone
wants them and plan to make them available in the new DOS section when I
bring it on line. However, I have no plans to maintain the older version
beyond its current state.
Currently, I test code only with two free compilers, Digital Mars and the
MingW32 port of gcc. This has proven to provide good coverage for both
Wintel and *nix platforms without the hassle of maintaining some half
dozen plus compilers on several platforms.
