That gnu indent error has always puzzled me.  Certainly the code looks
somewhat suspect from a human-readable point of view though, and would
disclose its meaning much better if written as

x = *y;


Nevertheless, I've always considered

x=-y;

to be equal to

x = -y;

rather than

x -= y;


I'd be astounded to see any current C compiler treat

x=-y;

as

x -= y;

To me, the distinction is quite clear.  :-)
