Where is the difference between SSHing into a BBS or SSHing into a linux
account and start Golded (or the editor of your choice)?
(Minus that most BBSes offer less functionality then a specialized tool for
that purpose (mailer, tosser, editor, etc.).)

My fido setup works like this for a very long time now.
I even use shell in a box to access my fido mails through my company firewall,
that should block access to SSH ;)

BTW I did also not really understand what is so complicated in compiling htick.
It is part of Husky, so you need the husky libs.
But it is explained very well in the docs.
Just my 2 cents.
