I'm within spitting distance of my wit's end. I can *almost*
trigger the file handles problem on demand.
"The disk is full or too many files are open"
(OK/Help) "Routine not found"
"Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure the
disk is not write-protected"
(OK/Help) "Word cannot open the Word help file because
Wordhelp.DLL was not found".
That last message is particularly galling, sugggesting as it does
that the programmer just couldn't be bothered to test the status
after calling the DLL file open routine to open the WordHelp.DLL
that it had found!
In all cases, I notice that if I carefully close the one file
that is open apart from my document file - it's a file with a
table of filenames, and I'm working my way through the table -
there is a pause of about five seconds, presumably while the
release-file-handles routine does what it should have been doing
all along - releasing file handles. THEN I can save the document.
Word is not freezing the system anymore. I just have to step in
and crowbar the mess apart for the files to start flowing again.
