Watch the footage again. The flames were not burning rubber or hydraulic fluid.

The flames were burning paint from the runway centre line markers. He
certainly did an excellent job.
Pilots do practice main-gear-only landings as part of their simulator time.

Modern technology - isn't it wonderful? I think, on balance, it would have
been a good thing - being able to see what was being done would have been
better than sitting in relative isolation allowing one's mind to dwell on
the (worst) possibilities.
