Your leaves could be turning yellow from a lack of nutrients.
Try some miracle gro on them if you haven't been feeding them
regularly, if that's the problem they'll green up fast.  How many
hours of sun do they get a day? That's one of the most important
items. Tomatoes need a lot of hours of sun. If they have only a
few hours a day it'll take a lot longer to ripen any tomatoes.

You can grow quite a few different veggies in containers
depending on your tastes. I've grown bush cucumbers, peppers,
carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach and some others in containers
with good luck.
