Responding to a message by Matt, to Charles on ...
MS>Or to deny admissions to kids with bad SAT scores.
The SAT is not a very good indicator of knowledge acquired - it does not
even make a pretense of being based on high school curriculums. Many
schools in our area are now more interested in the ACT which, as more
than one college recruiter has indicated to me, shows a much higher
correlation with success in college.
MS>Many colleges are so hard up for students they will take anyone, and
MS>they simply cannot realistically be expected to voluntarily
MS>go broke (faster) by getting tough on admissions to help
MS>public schools "motivate" kids.
Humorous, but true.
MS>The government, though, contributes greatly to this
MS>problem by giving the same financial aid regardless of
MS>high school class rank or SAT score.,
I see the government's role as different from that of colleges. It is
the college's job to set standards and to provide the education, not the
government's job. Do YOU really want government intruding further into
our lives, deciding who can and who can't go to college? Most people
wouldn't. No, the government's role here is that of support - to
encourage our children to get the best education they can and to
encourage high standards.
