I didn't say one could tell whether a speaker (set) is in or out of phase, 
only that some people CAN detect a difference in the sound between the two 
phasings.  Some percussive signals, such as (or in particular) a kick drum, 
will not have quite the same impact if speaker excursion is not phased the 
same as the original mic: as symmetrical as the *complete* sound may be, that 
initial blast of pressure can make a difference in the final product... 
assuming of course, the recording was made properly in the first place and 
that peak isn't lost along the way.
