You'd be surprised.  I've started pulling in files at 5120 cps at times. 
This is interesting because my serial port is locked at 38400 and should
only allow 4266 cps at best.

I got better results when the target BBS was 3 km away, not 200.

That's from Mount Barker (a small country town) to most sites around
Australia.  From Albany across town, I get connections as low as 14400!

I can call Albany from Mount Barker and connect at 28800 almost every time,
but calling Mount Barker from Albany, the best I got was 19200!  Figure
that!
