Further to my comments in an earlier message, and following from
an examination of 300 converted documents, I'll make the
following statement:
===============================================
AVOID THE USE OF MSWord'S INSERT-SYMBOL COMMAND
===============================================
Let's see why I'd say that.
Early on in the WP51---->Word6.0 conversion project I decided to
replace all the weird renditions of "less than or equal to" with
a proper symbol. I wrote a macro that would "I"nsert the "S"ymbol
in the document, hooked it to a toolbar, made a pretty icon, and
then when I came across any representation of "less than or equal
to", I'd select the character and click on my icon.
Likewise for plus-or-minus and greater-than-or-equal-to.
PRESTO! Consistent symbols throughout all the documents.
They look good -
BUT they are all the equivalent of the
ascii40 code. Lose the machinations behind the scenes, whether it
is character formatting or MSoft mumbo-jumbo, and you are left
with a scattering of ascii40 characters throughout your document,
with no easy way of determining whether you are looking at a
plus-or-minus or a less-than-or-equal-to or a greater-than-or-
equal-to.
Try fixing *that* mess up without hiring a $16/hour technical
proof-reader and printing out a WP51 version and a Word version
of each document.
I'm willing to debate this issue, any place, any time, any
conference. If you're *not* willing to debate it, then think very
carefully before using Insert Symbol.
Consider, instead, pasting from Accessories Character map.
I hope this helps.
