This gets back to the heart of your original rant. The only code I
collected was free for *any* sort of reuse (i.e. *not* GPL!), and my
"later use" began with republication. I consider this collection and
sharing. You obviously consider it something ignoble.

In those "old days", the standard of excommunication was "excessively
annoying behavior". In the rules I wrote for the echo, the litmus test of
such behavior was either blatant violation of the rules or other users
petitioning for someone's removal. It was never "my will". Also, since
echo administrative matters were always considered on-topic, the published
rules were subject to review by the membership.
The only particularly unpopular rule I enforced was the "neutral
territory" rule. During the first Gulf war, many American members objected
to it, while many European and other members thanked me for it. Overall,
everyone complied with it except Roy Browning, the 1st moderator of the
C++ echo (who actually worked for me at the time). As a patriotic
ex-Marine, he bristled that he couldn't include jingoistic taglines in his
messages and so left the C_Echo of his own choice In the end, I was
supported by a slim majority with many abstentions. Once the war was over,
most resistance to the rule evaporated.
