The French Army used a slightly modified variant of the flathead in military
vehicles until at least the 60's, and probably later.  Someone bought up a
bunch of the NOS blocks and was offering them for a couple grand each, IIRC.

The Simca automobile had a version of the V8-60 that it used under licence.
Probably that's the connection to the French Army.

I think it may have been the Halibrand company, of quick change and wheel
fame.
