Having just finished "Elric of Melnibone" I found it an enjoyable
read and a well done mythic tale.

I was afraid as I neared the end that everything was going to be sunshine
and roses after all the hell everyone had been through.  I thought it was
actually refreshing to see that Moorcock didn't go for the ultra happy
ending but retained the tone he had set through the book.

But, I also just finished "Mefisto In Onyx" by Harlan Ellison, so
perhaps I'm not one to judge "grim and depressing." :)
