Although I'm not a big fan of these because of weight; the person who make
the tools for the Chabot Telescope Makers' Workshop uses sand and cement.
After pouring, he coats the tool with epoxy and then applies tiles, much
like a standard plaster tools.
I don't like them because they are heavy and, if they do degrade, can
seriously contaminate the work. Most people who use them, however, have
not complained because they have proven quite rugged.
