Parsing adds a lot of overhead. Probably a simple matter for
any programmer worth his salt, and no significant amount of time
in processing for anything newer than a 16MHz XT. Still... why
bother when it is not needed and a simple conforming protocol is
easier to code and to use. One may also place a usage text into
one's program which is triggered by the standardized /? or just
the ? or even by no arguments being entered. In a more complex
setting than a command line, however, you would put all of your
command variables into radio buttons or check boxes and your
arguments would be in text boxes or dropdown lists or pulled from
dialogs giving the user the available choices. If you are going
to supply order of entry parsing rules to the user, then the
command line switches are just as easy to use and to remember, and
to program into a help utility when the /? is invoked.
