I really have to wonder where the myth of the light-hearted Who came from.

Is it because Doctor Who began as a children's program?

Is it because Douglas Adams was a script-editor on the program during its
seventeenth season?

Is it because Sylvester McCoy was famous before Who for stuffing ferrets in
his pants?

The Douglas Adams era and the more farcical moments of the Tom Baker era
were far more the exception than the norm for Who.  Out of three hundred
hours of television, perhaps twenty-five could be labelled comedy.
