It does.  One cc of water weighs one gram.  Now there are 100 centimeters
in a meter so cubing that yields 1,000,000 cc in a cubic meter, weighing
1,000,000 grams or 1,000 kilograms, which is a metric ton -- which is even
larger than an American ton, about 2,200 lbs IIRC.  The Beetle did indeed
weigh less.  Did you even see the movie "Castle Keep" where the
assholes dumped the VW fanatics Beetle in the moat and he went out and
rescued it?
