Which is why I'm curious at what the reaction to "Performance
Appraisal" will be when it's published in October.  I expect some
people will say, "Dude, you can't -do- that with a starship!"
while others will say, "Why didn't -I- think of that?  It all seems so
-clear-."  As one of the characters in the story says, "Starfleet
engineers overthink problems the simple problems, when all they require are
simple solutions."
