Yup. They took a LOT of maintenance.

They were a typical Cromemco mixture of high-tech and low-tech that
staggers the imagination. Replace their function with a working Smartmedia
reader/writer hidden inside the disk slot. That will give you 128MB random
access.

In their day they came very close to typesetters for their
presentation. Inkjet technology is so much more versatile, but that comes
at a cost. CDOS fit into 12 KB of eight bit memory. Inkjet dirivers alone
take more than that.

I have only three working drives - one CDROM (44x) on this. One DVD/CD
attached to the entertainment system, and a DVD/CD/RW combo drive on the
laptop. They all managed to read it OK. I'm getting a combo drive for this
at the weekend, but there is no guarantee that it will work.
We seem to have travelled in parallel.
Best Wishes,
Bill.
