| subject: | OS outside 1024 cyl?? |
I am looking at adding a 2.5GB hard disk to my system as my current 1GB and 540MB are full. I am planning the layout of partitions on the new 2.5GB and 1GB setup being careful to keep all operating systems (DOS, OS/2, Linux) within the first 1024 cylinders. In doing so, I examined the current setup and was surprised to find that for the last 2 years, the partition containing my OS/2 operating system is on the 1GB drive starting at cylinder 1300 and ending at cylinder 1607. The OS/2 book states that if a partition is going to contain an operating system, the partition must be in the first 1024 cylinders. Being outside that range, OS/2 shouldn't be able to boot but I have never had a problem with it. Are there exceptions to the rule stated in the book?
