Layton calls for more green cars, gives gears to Harper

WINDSOR, ONT. - NDP Leader Jack Layton pledged to provide incentives for
environmentally friendly cars Friday and criticized Stephen Harper for
being a threat to the auto industry.

"We'll take global leadership and promote the development and
manufacturing and marketing of green cars right here in Canada,"
Layton said to about 150 Canadian Auto Workers union members in Windsor
Ontario.

Layton slammed Harper's plan to cut corporate subsidies. "The only
jobs that Mr. Harper would create would be in Mississippi, not in
Canada," he said. "Conservatives don't believe in industrial
policies, industrial strategies, partnerships, the idea of building
together. They simply want to take it apart and be cast to the wind,"
he said.

Layton told autoworkers an NDP government would help automakers convert to
building hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles which don't produce greenhouse gas.
Layton said he would also give so called green-car buyers a GST rebate and
invest $500,000 in research into clean technology.
